Continuing The Work On The Wall

By Senior Pastor Dr. Bill Rains | March 1, 2026

On March 1, 2026, Pastor Bill Rains continues the 2026 theme “The Need For Nehemiahs” with a stirring message titled “Continuing The Work On This Wall” from Nehemiah 5:16: “Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall…” External enemies mocked and conspired; internal greed brought injustice. Yet Nehemiah declares: “I continued in the work of this wall.” No matter opposition from without, problems from within, or those who quit—he pressed on. We too must continue building—rebuilding lives ruined by sin—because we have a mandate from God, the only saving message, and mischief awaits quitters.

1. We Must Continue Because We Have a Mandate from God

Nehemiah didn’t conceive rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls. “God put it in my heart” (Neh. 2:12). The “good hand of my God” was upon him (Neh. 2:18). Pastor Rains: “We do what we do because God told us to do it.” The Great Commission is our mandate (Matt. 28:18–20): “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations… baptizing them… teaching them to observe all things…” We are “labourers together with God” (1 Cor. 3:9). “We are His building, fitly framed together” (Eph. 2:21). Continue—regardless of outside enemies, inside problems, or quitters. “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:23). “Continue in the faith” (Acts 14:22). “Earnestly contend for the faith” (Jude 3).

2. We Must Continue Because We Have the Only Message That Saves Souls

If Jerusalem’s walls weren’t rebuilt, enemies would destroy the city and people. We have the only message that saves from hell: Jesus Christ. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Pastor Rains: “We have the only message that will save souls.” Romans 10:14–15: “How then shall they call on him… how shall they believe… how shall they hear without a preacher?” Nicodemus came by night—Jesus said: “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Every time a sinner bows and trusts Christ, peace comes. “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Don’t quit—we carry the only saving message.

3. Mischief Befalls Those Who Do Not Continue

Sanballat and Tobiah invited Nehemiah to the plain of Ono—but “they thought to do me mischief” (Neh. 6:2). Pastor Rains: “The land of Ono is the land of Oh no—don’t stop building the wall.” Quitters face mischief—lost children, broken families, no purpose. “The saddest thing I know is families who once worked on the wall but quit. Their children never heard a Sunday school teacher, never felt loved in church.” But God can redeem—keep working, keep praying. “Even if bad things happened, return to the wall—God will bring your loved ones to salvation.” Speed (Bula Wells’ husband) resisted for years but trusted Christ on his deathbed. “Continue—God will fight for you.”

I continued in the work of this wall.
Mandate from God—keep going.
Only saving message—don’t quit.
Mischief awaits quitters—stay on the wall.
Will you continue the work today?

Pastor Rains closes passionately: “We’re laborers together with God. You’re more important than you imagine. Continue—regardless of opposition or problems. The only message that saves souls is ours. Mischief awaits quitters—but God redeems. Stay on the wall.” In a world of broken walls, the call is urgent: Continue the work.
