Getting Things Organized
By Dr. Bill Rains, Senior Pastor | April 19, 2026
Father, thank you for this great chapter before us and the great example that it sets for all of us today... Help us take these lessons deep in our hearts and start practicing them in our lives. In Jesus' name, Amen.
On April 19, 2026, Dr. Bill Rains preaches Getting Things Organized from Nehemiah 7:1-5, 66-73. With the wall now finished, Nehemiah shifts focus from building to organizing the city for effective, protected, and well-provided ministry—truths every believer and church desperately needs today.
1. The Promotion of Qualified Men
After the wall was built and the doors set in place, Nehemiah appointed leaders. He placed his brother Hanani and Haniah (the former ruler of the palace) in charge over Jerusalem. “For he was a faithful man and feared God above many.” (Nehemiah 7:2)
These men were chosen because they loved Jerusalem and the people of God, not for personal gain. They had proven faithfulness and a genuine fear of God—qualities far above the average. Dr. Rains reminded us that leadership in the church is not for just anyone. “It is required in stewards that a man be found faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:2) Paul told Timothy to commit the truth to “faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2)
Unqualified or unfaithful leadership dwarfs any organization. True promotion comes from the Lord, and it is reserved for those who are faithful and fear God.
2. The Protection of the City and Its Inhabitants
Nehemiah gave clear instructions: “Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot... shut the doors and bar them and appoint watches... everyone in his watch and everyone to be over against his house.” (Nehemiah 7:3)
Protection was paramount. The city needed constant watchmen, and every man was responsible to guard his own household. Dr. Rains challenged the men: You are the spiritual head of your home. God has made you a watchman over your wife and children. Every believer must help protect the church from grievous wolves—both from outside and from within (Acts 20:28-31).
Gentlemen, be spiritual watchmen in your homes. Ladies, if your husband will not lead spiritually, you step up and do it. We all must earnestly contend for the faith and guard what God has entrusted to us.
3. The Provisions for the Work of God
The chapter closes with generous giving. The chief fathers gave large offerings of gold, silver, and priestly garments. Then the rest of the people gave as well. Ministry and the needs of God’s work require provision—and God provides through His people.
Dr. Rains powerfully illustrated this with the widow’s mite (Mark 12:41-44). She gave all that she had—just two mites. Jesus declared she had given more than all the others because she gave everything. Some who have much give little; some widows with very little give faithfully from the heart. All of us can give something to the cause of Christ.
God’s work must be done with qualified, faithful leadership,
constant spiritual protection, and generous provision from God’s people.
Are you ready to step up?
Dr. Rains closed with a strong challenge: Leadership is not for the unfaithful. Every man must be a watchman over his house. And every believer must give generously to the work of the Lord. Let’s get things organized in our lives, our families, and our church—starting today.
