When Life Gets You Down

On August 30, 2026, Assistant Pastor Jaden Fitzpatrick preaches When Life Gets You Down from I Kings 19. Right after the great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah finds himself under a juniper tree asking God to take his life—and God meets him there with rest, refreshment, and a renewed call to keep going.
1. The Pressure That Broke Him
Elijah had just experienced one of the greatest victories of his ministry. Fire fell from heaven, the prophets of Baal were defeated, and the people saw that the Lord is God. Yet immediately afterward Jezebel threatened his life, and Elijah ran. The preacher points out that one of the biggest reasons we end up discouraged is unmet expectations. Elijah expected revival; instead he got a death threat. Victory does not make you immune to vulnerability. The sermon lists five moments the enemy loves to attack: when you are hungry (spiritually or physically), when you are angry, when you are lonely, when you are tired, and after big events. Sometimes the greatest discouragement comes right after the greatest victory. Life gets you down because the pressure simply becomes more than you feel capable of carrying. A wise word is given: you need to come apart occasionally before you come apart.
2. The Place Where He Hid
Elijah left his servant behind and went a day’s journey into the wilderness, sat under a juniper tree, and requested that he might die, saying, “It is enough now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” He went from standing before thousands to sitting alone under a tree. Discouragement often makes us want to withdraw. The enemy wants you isolated because isolation magnifies discouragement. Elijah’s circumstances caused him to focus on what was happening around him instead of what God was doing for him. The urgent counsel is clear: don’t make permanent decisions while sitting under a temporary juniper tree. Don’t make permanent decisions based on temporary problems.
3. The Provision That Sustained Him
As Elijah lay and slept under the juniper tree, an angel touched him and said, “Arise and eat.” There was a cake baked on the coals and a cruse of water. The angel came a second time and said, “Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.” God gave him rest, refreshment, resources, and reassurance. Elijah thought he was finished, but God was not finished with Elijah. Sometimes God’s answer to your discouragement is not a sermon or a spectacular miracle. Sometimes He simply says, “Rest, eat, get up, and keep moving.” God knows how to take care of His servants when they are too discouraged to take care of themselves.
4. The Purpose That Still Waited for Him
The Lord said to him, “Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus… anoint Hazael… Jehu… and Elisha… to be prophet in thy room.” In essence God said, “I gave you everything you needed. Now get back to work.” There was still a king to anoint, a prophet to train, and purpose for his life. Sometimes we give up just a breakthrough too short. If Elijah had quit under that tree, we would never have had Elisha or the double portion. God was not saying Elijah was finished; He was saying, “I still have more for you to do.”
Don’t let the pressure break you.
Don’t let the place isolate you.
Don’t overlook God’s provision, and don’t forget God’s purpose.
Elijah went to the juniper tree thinking he was done, but he left that experience knowing God was not done with him yet. The juniper tree may be where you are sitting today, but it does not have to be where you stay. Wipe your boots off, put your smile back on, quit the pity party, and keep moving. You don’t quit until God tells you to quit—and He has not said that yet. Listen to the still small voice, not the crowds. Just keep going.
