The Joyful Mother
By Senior Pastor Dr. Bill Rains | May 11, 2025
Open your Bibles to Psalm 113:9. He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the Lord. Let’s pray: Father, thank You for moms and their profound impact. Bless them today, encourage them, and draw every mom to know Jesus as Savior. Help those unsure of their salvation to trust You today. Help me preach in Jesus’ name, Amen.
On Mother’s Day, we honor moms, a gift from God. Pastor Rains reflects on his kind-hearted mother, grandmothers, wife Faith, mother-in-law Vie, and daughter-in-laws, all embodying godly love. He celebrates the moms at Mission Baptist who stood firm in tough times. Psalm 113:9 reveals God’s miracle of motherhood, turning barrenness into joy. Three truths guide us: motherhood is a divine gift, spiritual priorities are essential, and moms must rely on God in all circumstances.
Motherhood: A Gift from God
Motherhood is a miracle, not “just” a role. He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children (Psalm 113:9). God grants women the ability to conceive, cradle, and nurture life, as Psalm 139:13-16 describes: For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made…Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect. From conception, God knows each child’s details—hair, eyes, destiny. Pastor Rains shares about “Little Ricky,” born in tough circumstances yet called to preach, showing God’s plan in every life. Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Hannah, and Elizabeth, once barren, became joyful mothers by God’s power. Abortion rejects this gift; adoption is the loving choice. Moms, your role is the most vital on earth, ordained by God.
The Importance of Spiritual Priorities
Psalm 113 emphasizes spiritual realities: God is above all (verse 4), unique (verse 5), and sees all (verse 6), exalting the lowly (verse 7). Moms must prioritize salvation and spiritual growth. Acts 4:12 declares, Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Jesus is the only way (John 14:6). Moms, get saved—your kids need a praying mother. Ensure they’re in church; don’t let worldly busyness—school, sports—crowd out God. Matthew 6:33 promises, Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Prioritizing Jesus brings lasting provision and joy.
Relying on God in All Circumstances
Motherhood isn’t easy; it’s overwhelming at times. Barren women in Scripture relied on God when human means failed, and He made them joyful mothers. Moms face heart-shattering trials, yet those who trust God find strength. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Pastor Rains’ wife, Faith, faced devastating events but found joy through God’s strength. Romans 8:28 assures, We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Moms, press on—eternal joy awaits at God’s right hand (Psalm 16:11). Your faithfulness will be worth it.
